Kenji Egashira (Numot the Nummy)

We’re thrilled to highlight one of our awesome affiliate partners, NumotTheNummy. For over a decade, Kenji Egashira (better known by his MTGO handle) has been a constant positive presence in the Magic community through his regular streams, competitive play, and infectious enthusiasm for the game. We caught up with Kenji to learn more about his streaming journey, his wonderful community, and what keeps him passionate about Magic after all these years.

What’s the most meaningful or unexpected way your Magic content has impacted your audience?

Kenji: I occasionally get messages from people saying how they’ve been going through a rough time and that my content was a surprise reprieve from the doom and gloom they were facing. From my perspective I’m simply streaming games, but to others they’ve said it has made a world of difference just knowing they can tune in and sort of forget about any woes.

If you could describe your community’s vibe in three words, what would they be?

Kenji: Relaxed, Fun, Cozy

What’s one piece of Magic content you’ve made that you’re especially proud of, and why?

Kenji: I’m not sure there’s one “it” piece that I’ve done that feels overly special. I think for me it’s just the consistency, having been making content full-time for 13+ years, that I’m proudest of.

You’ve streamed Magic daily for over a decade. What’s kept you motivated, and how has the Twitch community shaped your approach?

Kenji: It’s definitely no longer a daily occurrence as I usually just stream on the weekdays, but I suppose that’s still an accomplishment in other ways. Luckily, Magic is sort of self-motivating in the sense that because of the amount of product they release, I’m never getting inundated with the same thing day in and day out. With new sets dropping every month (or at least that’s how it feels) it’s a constantly fresh set of content. The Twitch and YouTube communities have shaped that approach because I’m consistently trying to try out new things in any given format, especially the fun and wacky.

From your 365 day streaming challenge to the MOCS, what’s been your most grueling and rewarding competitive moment?

Kenji: The most grueling competitive moment was probably recently, during Arena Championship 8. It was the highest potential value event I had played in as I could qualify for the Pro Tour and even Worlds! The tournament was also extremely small in terms of competitors, so that was going to be my best chance at making some of the most prestigious Magic events. The most rewarding was probably just winning the MOCS Open, which qualified me for the Magic Online Championship Series Final. That was my first big score on a huge level, and something that initially started my Pro scene play.
