First up, I’d like to introduce you to Brian Lewis, better known as The Professor of Tolarian Community College. He launched his YouTube channel in August 2013 with an in-depth review of Magic card sleeves, and by the end of 2014, he was making two videos a week and had over 30,000 subscribers. In the past four years, The Professor has expanded his course offerings to include product reviews, deck techs, format primers, op-ed-style vlogs, and sketches featuring a revolving cast of Magic experts and entertainers. He has created a vibrant community of over 238,000 students of the game – a subscriber base second only to that of the official Magic: The Gathering YouTube channel.
Joining forces with The Professor was a no-brainer for us because he lives so many of our company values. From the very beginning, he has delivered critical but fair assessments of Magic products with the intent of helping consumers make more informed decisions about their purchases. He supports local game stores and encourages his viewers to do the same. He has used his platform to amplify the voices of other Magic content creators and has invited other YouTubers, podcasters, and cosplayers to collaborate with him.
Most importantly, The Professor shares our belief that Magic is more than a game, but a means of strengthening our relationships with each other and with ourselves. It’s a means of building community, challenging ourselves to think critically, and learning lessons that we can apply to our everyday lives. The Professor frequently opens up about the impact Magic has had on his life in his “Tolarian Winds” vlog series, and if you ever get a chance to interact with him, you’ll see just how much he loves the game and the people who play it. Here’s how he responded to a tweet from a friend who was nervous about playing in her first Day 2 win-and-in at GP Vegas:
“You’re not playing at a GP to win matches. You’re playing to improve your skill as a Magic player, in part by learning from your mistakes.”
Such wise words belong on a poster, or maybe even a playmat.
