This article is part of a series of profiles of the major characters in Magic’s Core Set 2020. Today, we’re looking at the life of Kaalia, a cleric caught up in the chaos following the Conflux on Alara.
Lia was born in a Bant village in the years after the Conflux, when the five Shards that made up Alara merged into one plane. As a child, she was bullied for both her physical disabilities and her weak magical skills, and she spent a lot of time alone as a result.
When Lia’s village was destroyed by Nefarox, the demon ruler of Grixis, she was rescued by a Nacatl warrior. When the Nacatl learned of Lia’s powerful magical abilities, he named her Kha (“chief”) Lia. Kaalia was able to use that power to defeat Nefarox’s minions, but Nefarox retaliated by killing Kaalia’s friends and family.
Kaalia vowed she would get revenge on Nefarox, and has been in hiding ever since, amassing an army of angels, demons, and dragons to fight him with. The following decklist represents that army, with Kaalia at its head.
