This article is part of a series of profiles of the major characters in Core Set 2020. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the life of Mu Yanling, a planeswalker first introduced in Magic’s Global Series.
Mu Yanling grew up by the ocean on the Plane of Mountains and Seas. When her home was destroyed by a tidal wave, Yanling was rescued and adopted by an adventurer named Li Shan. Years later, Li Shan died suddenly during a journey, and his body vanished. Yanling began to search the world for him, believing that there was a chance he might not be dead, and that maybe she could learn time magic and use it to save his life. Along the way, she met and befriended another planeswalker, Jiang Yanggu, who had lost his memory and was searching the plane for information about who he really was.
During the events of War of the Spark, Yanling and Yanggu were trapped on Ravnica. They helped evacuate the city’s inhabitants into the undercity, and stayed on Ravnica to back up the Gatewatch until Nicol Bolas was defeated. Once the war was over, they returned to their quest, searching across the Multiverse for the power to unlock Yanggu’s lost memories and bring Li Shan back to life.
