The Chalice: An MTG Fundraiser

Card KingdomEvents, Fundraiser

One of our greatest passions here at Card Kingdom is giving back to our community. For the last five years, our charitable giving program, ENGAGE, has been hosting fundraisers for non-profit organizations in our native Seattle, WA. ENGAGE’s biggest event of the year is The Gauntlet: an annual charity tabletop gaming tournament held at our local game store, Mox Boarding House, which brings together eighty Seattle-area gamers for a good cause.

As Card Kingdom has grown, we’ve been looking for more opportunities to do good in our community. Today, we’re pleased to add a new Magic event to our roster, which we’re calling The Chalice!

The Chalice is an exclusive charity tournament and a celebration of all things Magic: The Gathering. Eight Magic content creators will join us in Bellevue, WA, to compete in three challenges over the course of two days, and the winner will take home the Chalice itself! In the weeks leading up to the tournament, the players will be raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, which has provided mentoring for youth in our region for over 60 years.

The inaugural Chalice will take place October 20-21, and our eight competitors are…

Kenji “NumotTheNummy” Egashira, Magic streamer
Josh Lee Kwai of The Command Zone and Game Knights
The Professor from Tolarian Community College
Michelle Rapp, co-host of The Loregoyfs podcast
Ashlen Rose, Magic cosplayer and streamer
Gerry Thompson, Platinum-level Magic pro
James Turner of LoadingReadyRun
Chris VanMeter, CK Products Manager and content creator

And here are the three challenges that make up the Chalice tournament:

Guilds of Ravnica Booster Draft
Three rounds of gameplay; Swiss pairings.

Battle Deck “Auction of the People”
Players will bid on eight Battle Decks selected by our community by offering a reduced hand size or starting life total. Once decks are selected, the players will compete in three rounds of Swiss and will each have access to a Battle Deck sideboard.

Magic Block Party
Each player will build their own Magic block by drafting three sets from Magic’s history (plus a Core Set of their choice). Drafts will take place live on Twitter, and draft order will be determined by funds raised.

Wondering what you can do to support the cause?

  1. Donate to your favorite Chalice competitor. Your donations will help give them special advantages in the tournament, so choose wisely!
  2. Spread the word on social media using the hashtag #CKChalice.
  3. Seattle-area locals: Compete in our 64-player Modern tournament, which will be held at Mox Boarding House Bellevue concurrently with The Chalice. (More details to come!)
  4. Tune in to our livestream October 20-21 at twitch.tv/cardkingdom. We’ll have special giveaways going on throughout the weekend!
