Last week, we examined Nicol Bolas’s master plan for War of the Spark. Today, we turn to the Gatewatch, a team of planeswalkers dedicated to protecting the people of the Multiverse from Bolas.
The Gatewatch have been through a lot lately. Formed in response to the Eldrazi emerging on Zendikar in Oath of the Gatewatch, this planeswalker super-team works to protect the people of the Multiverse from inter-planar threats. Their problems began when they decided to go to Amonkhet, a plane controlled by Bolas, to confront him directly. Bolas defeated them easily, leaving them disorganized and disheartened and even causing some Gatewatch members to leave the team. Since then, though, they’ve regrouped, found some new members, and even started to plan a way to keep Bolas from taking over the Multiverse.
The decklist at the end of this article includes all the current members of the Gatewatch: Gideon Jura, Jace Beleren, Chandra Nalaar, Ajani Goldmane, and Teferi. Jaya Ballard hasn’t joined the Gatewatch, but she’s promised to fight alongside them. Daily MTG recently announced that even more familiar faces will show up to help, including Nissa Revane, Vivien Reid, and Sarkhan Vol. The Gatewatch might also get help from Ravnican citizens, including Lavinia, who is currently working to fight Bolas’ influence on the Azorius Senate.
Vraska is one more missing piece in the Gatewatch’s strategy. Right now, she works for Bolas, and she was included in last week’s Bolas-themed decklist. But in Rivals of Ixalan we saw Jace erase her memories of him to keep her safe from Bolas, and promise to restore them when the time was right. We don’t know yet when that might happen, but keep an eye out for Vraska switching sides to help the Gatewatch defeat Bolas.
I Will Keep Watch
The Gatewatch fights alongside the people of each plane to
protect them. This decklist brings the Gatewatch and the people of Ravnica
together to take back their world from Bolas and his Eternal army.
