Undaunted – MTG Mechanics Explained

Card KingdomStrategy

Undaunted, from Commander 2016, is a cost-reduction mechanic that gets better the more opponents you have. Any spell with the mechanic costs 1 generic mana less for each opponent you currently have. Yup. That’s it. I mean, here’s a few notes, but it’s pretty simple.

  • Undaunted only counts players currently in the game, not how many the game started with.
  • This discount does not change the total mana value of the spell.
  • Multiple instances of the mechanic (made possible with Durnan of the Yawning Portal), do stack, so a spell that has it twice gets double the discount.

While Undaunted does technically function in a game of one-on-one Magic, the spells with it are priced in such a way that you are still going to likely be paying the same amount or more than you would by playing another spell with the same effect. Very useful in games of Commander, it’s unlikely that Undaunted ever pops up in a non-Commander themed set.
