What Happens in the Edge of the Eternities Story?

Jacob LacknerMagic Story

Edge of Eternities releases on August 1st, and earlier this week we got the final chapter of the story. In this article, I’ll summarize the 11 chapter story into one digestible read.

NEW PLANE, NEW STORY

This story is set in a part of the multiverse we’ve never seen before – The Edge. It’s a space-like plane that surrounds the known multiverse and borders The Blind Eternities – the space in between planes and the home of the Eldrazi.

The story is only loosely connected to what has come before, with only one character that players will be familiar with from earlier Magic sets.

Fittingly, the story is a space epic, with space ships, aliens, planets, and all kinds of advanced technology.

WELCOME TO THE SOTHERA SYSTEM! DON’T STAY TOO LONG, THOUGH…

While the Edge is a vast plane that surrounds the known multiverse, the story of Edge of Eternities focuses on one star system in particular – the Sothera system. This system’s sun is turning into a super void. As a result, many of the planets in the system are no longer habitable, and the other denizens of its planets are being evacuated by an organization known as Pinnacle.

Pinnacle is an interplanetary alliance that has recently arrived in the system to help its residents. They have access to faster-than-light travel through the use of machines called eternity columns. They built one of these in the Sothera system to allow for evacuation.

There is also a religious war being fought in The Edge, between The Celestial Palatinate and The Monasteriat. These two groups have very different views about Supervoids like Sothera.

The Monasteriat are Monoists. This means they practically worship supervoids, and they want to accelerate their formation using Sekhars – small beads that accelerate and can even create supervoids. They also use these beads on themselves when they are captured. They believe that Supervoids are actually doorways into “The Next Eternity” – a paradise of sorts, and they want them to spread throughout The Edge.

Meanwhile, the Celestial Palatinate are Summists. This means they want to reignite collapsed supervoids using their horizon javelins – gigantic ships that have the power to revive dying stars.

TWO CRIMINALS IN SEARCH OF A CAT

In the midst of all the chaos of an interplanetary natural disaster and a religious war, there are also two people who are just trying to find a cat, while also running a criminal enterprise.

These two individuals are Tannuk and Sami. Sami once had a cat named Mirri who weftwalked one day and disappeared. Weftwalking is just something cats can do in The Edge, and it means that they can travel through the plane without needing to use Eternity Columns or other forms of space travel.

Ever since then, Sami has been looking for their cat, even while undertaking various dubiously legal jobs in their ship – The Seriema. Due to their cat obsession, their crew now only consists of one other person – Tannuk.

The two of them were hired by someone known as Metalman to retrieve something from a remote clay mining colony called Sigma’s Reach. A mine that never opened. Despite this, when Sami and Tannuk investigate, they find discarded spacesuits that are warm to the touch.

When they think they hear a cat meowing, Sami takes off running to the sound’s location. Along the way, Tannuk and Sami find several strange things, including the impressions of bodies glazed in clay, as well as sand that has turned to glass. The colony’s computer tells Sami that the formations are just a coincidence, but they have their doubts.

Sami is distracted from the investigation when they hears a cat meowing again. In pursuit of Mirri, Sami finds the object they were hired to find – a strange glowing egg. It causes their spacesuit to malfunction and knocks them unconscious.  The two of them escape the abandoned colony, unsure of the nature of this strange object that seems to have projected Mirri’s voice.

THE FRONTLINES OF THE ENTROPY WAR

Meanwhile, a young Monoist acolyte named Alpharael is having a crisis of faith. He joined the Monoists because his sister died and he believes he’ll see her again in The Next Eternity. However, one night he has a dream where his sister is being sucked into Sothera, and she cries out in pain. Feeling conflicted and unsure about what he once believed with such conviction, he requests that he be part of the next assault on The Celestial Palatinate, hoping he’ll die. He joins a mission of suicide commandos that plans to attack The Dawnsire, the flagship of the Free Company, the most elite unit in the Palatinate military.

On The Dawnsire, a squire named Haliya is preparing her assigned Knight – a man named Syr Vondam – for battle. After making their preparations, she has a meal with some friends, during which Alpharael and the other Monoists make their attack.

In the moments leading up to the battle, Syr Vondam and Haliya receive a prophecy from an Astelli named Captain Slats. The Astelli themselves are the sentient living remains of stars. In Slats’s prophecy, it is revealed that Vondam will die in the battle.

In the subsequent battle, Haliya and her comrades are victorious. When facing capture, Alpharael does something no one expects – he uses his black hole bead not as a way to go to the Next Eternity, but as a weapon. He hurls in at Vondam, who is killed.

After the battle, Slats interrogates Alpharael, who reveals that he no longer believes in the ideology of the Monoists. Slats elects to let him go, saying Vondam’s sacrifice converted him.

However, it turns out Vondam somehow survived, even though multiple witnesses saw him die. The black hole bead went through his skull, but he has an exit wound. Vondam tells Haliya that the chances of things going that way were incredibly small, and there must be something bigger at work to save both him and Alpharael.

TANNUK’S HOMECOMING DOESN’T GO SO WELL

As the war rages between the Monoists and Summists, Sami and Tannuk make their descent to the planet Kavaron – Tannuk’s home world. He’s been exiled from his people, but he has something important hidden on the planet that he needs to retrieve – a stasis cask. They want to use this to contain the strange egg, because they are concerned about what it might do to the ship and them during the rest of their journey.

Their mission needs to be a fast one, though, since Tannuk is banned from the planet. However, things really, really don’t go according to plan. As they are making their stealthy descent, a Palatinate ship enters the atmosphere at high velocity and smashes into the planet’s surface. Despite the danger it poses to their cover being blown, Tannuk and Sami choose to investigate the craft.

When they do, they find Alpharael. In the crash, he severed his hand and is bleeding heavily. He explains that he managed to escape Palatinate custody by hijacking one of their ships. While Tannuk and Sami are trying to understand the situation, they are surrounded by the Kav military.

Thinking quickly, Sami formulates a plan. They claim that they are Monoists who are there to rescue their shipwrecked comrade, as well as to recover a damaged sekhar that is hidden in a cache on the planet. This ruse works, as the Kav aren’t keen on a broken black hole bead being on their planet, and they also don’t want to create any problems with the powerful Monoist faction.

The Kav allow them to visit Tannuk’s stash, from which he retrieves his hidden stasis cask. Then, they return to the ship, where the Kav military announces they will be taken into custody after securing the sekhar on it.

Sami has no intention of being taken into custody though. They asks Alpharael to put the sekhar into the stasis cask. Alpharael understands he’s supposed to create a distraction. He realizes the Kav probably have no idea what a sekhar looks like, so he grabs the first thing he sees – the glowing egg.

When he does, he begins levitating and babbling in a strange voice. He talks about the Next Eternity, his sister, the Monoists, and more. As he does, the Kav military’s bodies begin twisting and shuddering, with even their armor creaking and moaning as it becomes malformed.

Eventually, he loses consciousness and the artifact is carefully placed in the stasis cask. Sami and Tannuk decide to load up the injured Kav and take them to a community where they can get medical help.

While in that Kav settlement, Tannuk is questioned about how the accident occurred. He claims it happened on Sigma’s Reach in a mining accident. This seems like a very bad lie, but to Sami’s surprise, the Kav seem to think it makes sense. Not only that, they complain that the mine on Sigma’s Reach is damaging their economy and their exports.

Unable to contain their curiosity, Sami tells the Kav leader that the colony was never opened. This causes confusion, but just as they begin discussing the issue, a Palatinate ship arrives on Kav looking to take Sami and Tannuk into custody.

CHANGING THE PAST?

As Haliya is preparing for the assault on Kavaron, Vondam’s condition has worsened. He says he no longer feels like himself, and he also reveals that he has strange knowledge he didn’t have before. He knows there is a strange object that is capable of changing the past, and that Alpharael is somehow going to obtain it. He explains that this object is the greatest threat there is.

While the Kav and the Free Company are fighting outside the ship, Alpharael is dreaming. He once again sees his sister taken into the singularity, but he is also spoken to by a strange entity that seems to inhabit the glowing egg.

It tells him that the egg changed the past so that the Palatinate ship that crashed gave off more radiation and landed near the Kav army. This is what caused their injuries.

When he wakes up, Alpharael sees a strange transparent hole in his hand. He assesses his situation, and realizes that the Palatinate has arrived and are trying to take him into custody. He turns to the egg, and asks it to help him. But this time, nothing happens when he holds the object. He also finds that he can use his partially transparent hand to phase through objects.

As he’s exploring the ship and his new abilities, the door to the ship opens, and Alpharael turns to find Haliya standing in the doorway. He rushes over to the egg, and asks for more help. However, nothing happens, and instead he’s shot by Haliya.

Expecting her to finish him off, Alpharael is surprised when she asks him to use the object to undo what he did to Vondam. She asks him to have her die in his place. Alpharael agrees, even though he’s unsure he can do that.

Vondam discovers her new plan, and pleads with her over the intercom to just finish off Alpharael and retrieve the object, but she ignores them. Just then, Sami and Tannuk approach her from behind, and Haliya turns and shoots both of them, killing them in an instant.

While she’s distracted, Alpharael grabs the syringe that was used to keep him sedated and uses his newfound phasing abilities to inject Haliya’s ankle with it, bypassing her armor, knocking her unconscious.

ALPHARAEL GETS A REDO

Alpharael, Stonechosen

Tannuk and Sami enter their ship and see that Haliya has been knocked unconscious by Alpharael. He explains that a moment earlier, the two of them were dead. Unsure what to make of this, and needing to make their retreat off the planet, Sami and Tannuk have Alpharael put the egg back into stasis.

As they prepare to make their escape, The Free Company’s largest ship called The Sundog arrives and mercilessly opens fire on the Kav settlement. The devastation wrought by this powerful weapon reminds Sami of what they saw on Sigma’s Reach – glass and baked clay. They suggests that the strange egg has been altering the timeline ever since they retrieved it. And they note, “Anywhere the Metalman’s rock goes, the Free Company kills everyone.”

Meanwhile, Haliya has regained consciousness and witnessed the devastation. She contacts Vondam and begs him to stop the attack, which is killing civilians, including children. Vondam refuses, indicating that they have to do whatever they can to locate the object. She tells Vondam that she’s on the ship with the object and begs him to shoot it down, but he refuses, indicating that they want to obtain the object.

This shakes Haliya to her core, and she begins questioning her own belief system, just like Alpharael. She chooses to abandon the Free Company, and Alpharael applauds her for realizing how silly both Sumist and Monoist ideology are.

Once they’ve escaped, those on the Seriema begin to discuss their pasts, and the strange object’s powers to alter the timeline of those who come into contact with it. Both Alpharael and Haliya are ultimately convinced by Sami to join them in their mission to take the strange egg to Metalman – and to find their cat.

METALMAN REVEALED, ENDSTONE IDENTIFIED

The Seriema and its crew of misfits meet up with Metalman. Sami reveals that his name is actually Tezzeret, and “Metalman” is just a nickname they use, and that none of them should call him that.

The planeswalker is there to collect the glowing egg, which he reveals is called The Endstone and that he wants to be it’s conduit. Alpharael tells him that the Endstone has already chosen him. He listens to the crew’s stories about the Endstone rewriting time, and he becomes very wary of it.

He reveals that he intends to find the Endstone’s maker and sell it to them, as he is very curious about who this person might be. He wants to see just how powerful they are.

Tezzeret has been working with the Illvoi, large jellyfish-like beings who specialize in engineering and technology. They are who alerted him about the Endstone. The Illvoi want to experiment with the Endstone on the way there, but Tezzeret tells them that it’s too dangerous.

CHAOS AT INFINITE GUIDELINE

Sami realizes they are going to need warp capabilities in order to go where the Endstone came from, and that the only way they can get their hands on something like that is by going to the Infinite Guideline – the Pinnacle’s spacestation in the Sothera system.

When they arrive at the Guideline, they find the Monoists and Palatinate already locked in battle. The crew of the Seriema sends out three distress signals – Alphareal and Haliya each contact their former faction, while Sami contacts those aboard Infinite Guideline.

Sami and Tannuk get an audience with an insect-like alien named Mantis, and they tell them about their true goals, while also explaining that the Endstone exacerbated the conflict between the Monoists and the Palatinate by altering the timeline for unknown reasons.

As they discuss what to do next, Sami notices that the walls of the station’s docking bay has been pierced, and something comes in through the hull.  Suddenly, Sami, Tannuk, and Mantis are face to face with a strange purple tentacled being around which the atmosphere is warping and twisting. Unbeknownst to them, they are face-to-face with an Eldrazi.

They attempt to fight off this creature, which charges them, but all of their attempts to kill or even harm it fail. Mantis tells Tannuk and Sami to flee, and they don’t waste any time doing so. Tannuk identifies the strange creature as “an eld,” ancient beings that have been spotted near the core of his homeworld.

As more of these creatures block their path, Sami thinks quickly and begins looking in stasis casks for anything they might be able to use as a weapon. To their surprise, they find Mirri in one of them and is overjoyed despite the chaos all around them. However, the instant one of the Eldrazi approaches them, Mirri weftwalks away again.

Enraged, Sami manages to channel the ship’s electrical systems into the Eldrazi, incapacitating one of them. However, another one overpowers Tannuk who is fighting for his life. But he is saved by the sudden appearance of Barrow, a Drix. These are powerful denizens of The Edge that are capable of weftwalking. Barrow tells them that the Eldrazi are attacking them because they are “dusted in potential matter.”

Before really explaining what that means, Barrow disappears as quickly as he arrived.

Meanwhile, while Alpharael and Haliya are attempting to commandeer a warp ferry for the ship, Haliya encounters her old knight – Syr Vondam. Now on opposite sides of the conflict, with Haliya no longer believing in the cause of the Palatinate, the two enter into a fierce battle. Syr Vondam largely bests his former squire, but she uses Alpharael’s transparent hand to phase into Vondam’s spinal column, paralyzing him.

PARTING AT THE WURMWALL

Alpharael, Haliya, Sami, and Tannuk make their way back to the ship. Along the way, they notice that the Eldrazi have no interest in the Monoists. When they encounter one of them, they ask if they brought the Eldrazi with them. He responds that they didn’t, but for some reason the strange creatures don’t pay any attention to the Monoists.

Once they are assembled, the crew uses the warp ferry to escape the ongoing battle. Sami is also very happy to find that Mirri weftwalked to The Seriema this time, and the pair are reunited.

Tezzeret and Apharael manage to ask the stone where it needs to be taken, and it points them towards The Wurmwall – the asteroid belt that rings the Sothera system. It’s a frightening place where many titanic creatures reside.

As they approach their destination, something very strange happens. The very cosmos themselves split open inside The Seriema, and a being appears before them. It’s a slender, green figure parts of which seem to be somewhere else. It quickly shows the group how powerful it is. Haliya attacks it with her blade, managing to sever two of its fingers, but the being uses its other hand to crush Haliya’s windpipe.

The being, which seems to have knowledge of the past, present, and future delivers many cryptic messages. It calls itself “the last thing,” tells Sami “the serpent needs a hero,” and tells Tezzeret that he smells of aether.

As Sami prepares to attempt their own strike on the figure, the cosmos open again and it disappears with the Endstone

Tezzeret gleefully examines the severed fingers of their erstwhile guest, while remarking that the powerful being appeared to be somewhat like a planeswalker, while Sami tries to find solace in the fact that they found Mirri after so many years of searching.

WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?

This story ended more abruptly than most, so it has many loose ends. The most notable of these is the identity of the planeswalker-like being that took The Endstone.

Is it some sort of entity that inhabits The Endstone? Is it something else entirely?

Whatever took it is going to get a massive powerup, as The Endstone is one of the most powerful objects we’ve ever seen in the multiverse. Rewriting people’s choices and time itself is pretty insane. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the stone undo some major events that are considered canon in the Magic story.

Also, now that we’ve seen that the Eldrazi still inhabit The Edge, are they going to become a multiversal threat once more? Or are they going to stick to The Edge for now? What is the “potential matter” that attracted the Eldrazi in the first place? Why didn’t they want to attack the Monoists?

These are all questions that will probably be answered in the Magic story over the next year, and I’m excited to see where it leads.

END STEP

So, that’s the story for Edge of Eternities. It was certainly different than anything that came before it, and it gave us an exciting new direction for the Magic story. What did you think of it? Let me know over on X or Bluesky.
