20 Coolest Cards in Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart

Kristen GregoryCommander, Products

Marvel Super Heroes releases June 26, and alongside the main set and the four Commander Precon decks, there’s a new Jumpstart product. We love Jumpstart for teaching new players the game, and combining it with Marvel Super Heroes is bound to help get your friends interested in Magic. If you just want to pick up some singles though, here are the 20 Coolest Cards in Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart.

20 BEST CARDS TO PICKUP IN MARVEL JUMPSTART

Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart has a heck of a lot of cards – it takes up slots #583-#833 on the MSC part of the release (alongside the intro decks and Commander decks). Plenty of those cards are well oriented towards the main archetypes of the precons, like Hero and Villain decks – but many can be played in your existing builds. These are our picks of the cream of the crop.

CAPTAIN AMERICA, LIBERATOR

There are twenty-one eligible equipment Cap can find just from the Marvel release, and that’s before you could the likes of Shadowspear, Sword of Hearth and Home and Lightning Greaves. An enters-the-battlefield tutor for Equipment is always good, and sticking it on a 5/5 body that can generate plenty of soldier tokens makes for a great top-end in equipment decks.

DAUGHTER OF THE DEEP

Blue-white and Bant (blue-white-green) Merfolk decks have seen something of a resurgence in recent years, with Simic (blue-green) Merfolk taking the backseat a bit since Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Daughter of the Deep is a solid pickup for either color combination, although clearly intended for – and better in – the blue-white versions of the deck. Extra tokens and unblockable at two mana is just what the deck wanted.

IMMORTUS, MASTER OF ETERNITY

Okay, this one kinda rocks. By having him tap to add blue equal to the cards you’ve drawn this turn, you end up, essentially, with a way to free-cast most of your card draw spells, because you’ll get that mana straight back. At that point, you can use it to cast the best stuff you’ve just drawn. I think even without the power-up ability I would be very interested in this card, but giving you the ability to get an optional Timetwister is just icing on the cake.

IRON MAN, BLEEDING EDGE

This Iron Man might be at the cutting bleeding edge of all Iron Men printed in the set. Copying your spells is always good, and copying permanent spells can lead to some of the more broken interactions in the game. Getting to bypass the legendary rule leads to even more shenanigans. I like this one a lot in The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster as a curve topper that can copy your most broken Equipment – check out our deckbuilding guide for Mighty Thor for more on that.

LOKI, LORD OF MISRULE

While we’re on the subject of bypassing the legend rule, let’s talk about Loki, Lord of Misrule (with fabulous art by Toni Infante, it has to be said). Having this effect repeatable instead of on a one-off sorcery like Nanogene Conversion from WHO is pretty huge. For all of you out there still playing Etrata the Silencer, your time has come. For everyone else doing weird copy stuff in blue – have at it.

REED RICHARDS, SMARTEST MAN

While Consecrated Sphinx might well remain a better option when you’re spending this much mana, Reed Richards, Smartest Man is still a competitive option as far as top-end card draw goes. He essentially turns all of your triggers and cantrips into four cards, which is a substantial upgrade. No maximum handsize stapled on is a nice include, too.

VISION, SPECTRAL SYNTHEZOID

Omniscience is a great win condition, but there are relatively few cards that can reanimate it once it’s in the graveyard – and you tend to have to be firmly in an Enchantress theme or sub-theme to do it. While Vision isn’t Omniscience, it is a free spell once each turn, and it can be reanimated significantly easier, in a Dimir shell in particular – but even with white spells like Refurbish. You could, of course, just massively cost reduce your artifacts. Either way, Vision is a decent enabler and top-end.

BLACK WIDOW, DEADLY HUNTER

Deathtouch decks have gotten a fair bit of love lately, and that love continues with Black Widow, Deadly Hunter – another card from Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart with absolute banger art. A three mana creature that enables card draw is perfect for these decks, and the fact you can put her in the command zone like Edric, Spymaster of Trest could lead to a fair few Black Widow decks.

DOCTOR DOOM, UNRIVALED

Do you like Doomsday? Do you want a silly Commander for a Doomsday deck? Well, you could run Doctor Doom, sure, but invariably he’s gonna be better in the 99 of existing Doomsday piles. It is really nice to get an alternative to Thassa’s Oracle, it has to be said. Cool wincon at any rate.

ULTRON THE ANNIHILATOR

Ultron the Annihilator has a titan-style EtB and attack trigger of making a 2/2 robot token. So what do you get instead of the extra 2/2 from a Grave Titan? Well, something probably better most of the time: a Syr Konrad-esque damage ping for artifacts. Having both of these in the same deck will absolutely shred life totals – but so will having Ultron alongside artifact pingers.

KAROLINA DEAN, RUNAWAY

Hey look at that, it’s a free activation of Sisay, Weatherlight Captain.

NICO MINORU, RUNAWAY

Nico Minoru is a hell of a win condition for decks that want to repeatedly cast from exile, offering a clean 2 damage to each opponent unlucky enough to witness you casting spells that aren’t in your hand. You’ll have to find a balance here between impulse draw, flashback, damage amplification and cards like Passionate Archaeologist, but all in all, it looks like a sweet build-around.

THE VISION AND SCARLET WITCH

The Vision and Scarlet Witch is a Birgi, God of Storytelling that not only gets bigger, but also flies?! Artifact synergies, too, which makes for quite the card. An enabler  and a win condition in one card, to be sure – and a popular hero team-up to boot.

DEVIL DINOSAUR

Ghalta, Zacama, Gishath and Pantlaza players, this one’s for you! A cheeky four drop T-Rex that’ll give the rest of your board hexproof? Bonkers value. Instant staple, to be quite honest. Not much more to say.

GIANT–MAN, GARGANTUAN GENIUS

Giant-Man is a sneaky good mana source for green decks that care about big creatures. While you might play a few mana dorks in any green list, if you’re doing landfall with Baloth tokens or any other ferocious build, then getting a 6/6 Reach for five mana that adds a bunch of green can really help you snowball and cast that Finale of Devastation or big Genesis Wave ahead of curve.

HIT–MONKEY

Hit–Monkey is a variety bucket of keywords stapled to a four drop – where have we seen this before? This questing beastie is devoted to the Boggles lifestyle though. Being hexproof and hastey means Hit–Monkey is perfect for putting Auras and Equipment on. A great include in existing voltron/enchantress decks, and a worthy Commander, too.

TIPPY–TOE, TERRIFIC PARTNER

Squirrel decks and food decks are both well placed to welcome Tippy–Toe, Terrific Partner into the fold. You’ll need her if you’re building Squirrel Girl for a start, but this one fits in way more decks that  just that, in mono-green, Golgari, and even Bant.

ASTONISHING SPIDER–MAN

Astonishing Spider–Man might be one of the coolest Spider–Man cards in my opinion, not least because the hybrid mana gives it such a nice and complementary red and blue aesthetic.  Drawing for each card you’ve discarded in a turn is a fun way to wheel through cards, and there are plenty of ways to build around this.

SWORDSMAN’S STEEL

And finally what may end up as the most in-demand card from Jumpstart – and bear in mind, not as much Jumpstart is opened compared to the main set – Swordsman’s Steel

An EtB that draws for each equipment in play, and a big buff? Instant staple. Bonkers Magic card.
