I hate to hand it to Jace Beleren under these circumstances (or ever), but Reality Fracture is a really incredible set. That goes for Limited too. We’ve had a couple of planeswalker-focused draft formats before, but it’s still a rare treat – and none before have done it quite like this. Leaning into his worst self as “The Theorist”, Jace’s …
I always feel an added sense of mystery and adventure when I draft a Universes Beyond set. In order to faithfully adapt the source material, these formats often make fundamental changes to how booster packs are constructed, the size of the card pool, or other factors that lead to a weird and warped Limited experience. But in The Hobbit, I …
When you think about it, Draft plays an important role for Universes Beyond sets. Only a handful of the cards in Marvel Super Heroes are destined to find a lasting place in the metagame of Standard, Commander, or other Constructed formats. Even then, they will typically be just one or two Marvel cards playing a role alongside cards from other …
Secrets of Strixhaven is a uniquely challenging Draft set to wrap your head around. Unique, that is… unless you played the original Strixhaven! Much like its predecessor this new set has a heavy emphasis on instants and sorceries, and their interplay with the students and professors of Strixhaven’s five colleges. As a Draft format this provides some really memorable archetypes …
The latest Magic release is another Universes Beyond tie-in, with the totally-tubular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cards now available at your LGS and on MTGArena. I personally don’t know much about the TMNT franchise, so unlike some other Universes Beyond sets I can’t say how good a job this one does adapting signature characters and storylines. I’m only focused on …
Lorwyn Eclipsed is a Limited format that wears its heart on its sleeve. When a set is built from the ground up around a handful of key creature types, changelings, and other typal synergies, most players don’t need a fancy strategy guide like this one to tell them what’s up. You just jump into this set, choose a type like …
Welcome to the Card Kingdom draft guide for Avatar: The Last Airbender – the Magic set! I’ve already written and thought about this set and its mechanics quite a bit, moreso than I usually do before writing the draft guide. If you’ve been reading those pieces, then you’ll know my early opinion on A:TLA is very positive – and I’m …
We’ve seen some big crossovers already this calendar year, but Avatar: The Last Airbender has to be one of the most hotly anticipated Universes Beyond sets to hit Magic. The beloved cartoon series has retained its relevance for a generation now, and there’s fans of all ages who can’t wait to enjoy seeing its fantastic world and characters portrayed through …
Welcome readers, to the official Card Kingdom guide to Marvel’s Spider-Man Draft! Also known as Through the Omenpaths, Part 1 Draft for anyone on MTG Arena! This is a unique and weird set design with equally unique and weird changes to its default draft rules. If you want a rundown of the Pick-Two format and how it might affect your …
It might be weird to say I feel sympathy for a Magic set. But Edge of Eternities really got a raw deal: not only was its debut slotted between huge Universes Beyond sets like Final Fantasy and Marvel’s Spider-Man, but it also had the challenge of launching the game’s first “space fantasy” setting. Could this one release manage to make …
